BANGKOK, 21 May 2012 – The Foreign Minister has disclosed that Thailand and Qatar are keen to elevate mutual cooperation in the fields of food security and energy.

Following Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s official visit to Qatar during the previous week, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul has disclosed that the leaders of both countries were content with the progress of mutual friendship and cooperation. In addition, the two premiers had also stressed their determination to enhance cooperation in various fields of mutual interest.

Mr. Surapong pointed out that the PM regards the Thai-Qatari economic partnership an important matter of concern. Thus, she has urged the private sector of both countries to elevate their level of cooperation in the fields of food security, tourism investment, and energy.

The Minister stated that on the occasion of the PM’s official visit, Thailand and Qatar have signed an agreement on the recruitment of Thai workforce in Qatar, an MOU on health cooperation, an agreement on cultural cooperation, and an agreement on cooperation in the field of trade and investment in agricultural products and commodities, especially halal food.

Qatar is an important partner of Thailand in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and in the Middle Eastern region. Meanwhile, Thailand, with its strategic location in the Southeast Asian region, will become Qatar’s gateway and hub of ASEAN and nearby regions once the ASEAN Community is established in 2015.
