BANGKOK, 8 May 2012 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra today delivered a speech on the occasion of Farmers’ Day, pledging further support for the agricultural sector.
In her speech, Ms Yingluck said farmers have played a crucial role in the economic and social development of the country. Due to the strength of the country’s agricultural sector, she indicated that Thailand has weathered several crises, including last year’s great flood.
The government is determined to provide more support and assistance for the sector, with measures ranging from improving the current agricultural structures to implementing the philosophy of sufficiency economy and revising the water management system for agriculture.
She added that to achieve an increase in trade and export volume in preparation for the ASEAN Economic community in 2015, the government has set three important agricultural policies in motion. The measures include strengthening the country’s farm sector on a sustainable basis, increasing crop productivity through research and development and expanding the role of existing agriculture businesses and resources.
