BANGKOK, 3 May 2012 – The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has announced that it will collaborate with various agencies on the development of Thailand’s intellectual properties ahead of the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.

On the occasion of the DIP’s 20th anniversary, Deputy Minister of Commerce Siriwat Kajornprasart presided over the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the department and the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards and the Thai Industrial Standards Institute. The MOU is related to the examination and verification of Thai products based on geographical indications, aiming to assure that the goods are in line with global standards and to prevent any right infringements.

The DIP also signed another MOU with the Office of the Vocational Education Commission to promote the protection of Thai ideas and inventions initiated by vocational institutions.

During the ceremony, the IP Champion 2012 awards were presented to business owners who have been most successful in taking advantage of their IP rights for commercial purpose. The awards, according to the DIP, play a big role in promoting the importance of IP rights among business operators.
