BANGKOK, 12 April 20112 The Chom Thong District Office has held a special celebration on the occasion of the upcoming Songkran Festival as well as the Day of the Elderly.
Bangkok Council Chairman Suthichai Weerakulsoonthorn presided over the opening ceremony of the 2012 Songkran celebrations and the Day of the Elderly activities in Bangkok’s Chom Thong district. More than 300 senior citizens were present at the event, which was held to promote and conserve the Thai tradition as well as raise the public’s awareness on the importance of showing gratitude towards elderly people, which is a long-standing tradition of the nation.
In today’s ceremony, senior citizens were presented with fresh “Lam Duan” flower, a symbol of the elderly. Other activities to celebrate the occasion included shows of Thai traditional music and stage performances. Participants also observed the age-old traditions of pouring scented water on a Buddha’s statue and asking for blessings from the elderly, after which they enjoyed a luncheon together.
