BANGKOK, 11 April 2012 – The Royal Thai Navy has advised sailors and people in the Andaman coast to evacuate after its Hydrographic Department received tsunami warnings.

Commander of the 3rd Naval Area Command Vice Admiral Tharathorn Khachitsuwan, who oversees the Andaman coast, says boats should sail at least 10 miles offshore to steer clear of a tsunami and people on the land should evacuate to a higher ground. These instructions are in the tsunami evacuation plan used since 2004.

The 3rd Naval Area Command has been informed of tsunami possibility in six Andaman coastal provinces around 6 PM today after an 8.9-magnitude quake hit Sumatra Island in the Indian Ocean around 4 PM.
