BANGKOK, 11 April 2012 – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has assigned its provincial offices in the South to prepare officials and volunteers to facilitate an evacuation amid a tsunami threat.
After an 8.7-magnitude earthquake occurred this afternoon off the northwestern coast of Sumatra Island in Indonesia, tsunami warnings in Thailand have been issued in several southern provinces. DDPM Director-General Wiboon Sanguanpong said the department has readied its personnel for the evacuation.
According to Mr Wiboon, DDPM offices in Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, Trang, Ranong, and Satun are paying close attention to the situation. Equipment and necessities for an emergency situation have been prepared.
Residents in the coastal areas are told to move to high grounds or take shelter in stable buildings. People who need assistance can call 1784.
