BANGKOK, 26 March 2012 – A recent survey conducted by Ramkhamhaeng Poll shows that a large portion of Bangkok residents are against the plan to convert Chatuchak weekend market into a fully air-conditioned bazaar.
The Ramkhamhaeng poll revealed the results of a survey on the public’s opinion of the SRT’s plan to upgrade the weekend market. The survey, conducted on 5,074 people in Bangkok, found that 32.81 percent of respondents did not agree with the planned upgrade, while 27.47 percent did agree. 23.32 percent also said they would no longer shop at the air-conditioned Chatuchak market.
Asked about the possible outcome of the upgrade, 49.70 percent said the price of goods would rise while 16.81 percent responded that due to the rent spike, the current vendors would be forced to give up their stalls.
However, 21.68 percent of respondents said they would still frequent the weekend market as it is a one-stop destination for a variety of retail needs.
