BANGKOK, 24 January 2012 – To ease the egg oversupply problem, the Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has declared 2012 the Year of Egg Consumption while cooperating with egg farmers and relevant units in organizing related campaigns.
DIT Director-General Vachari Vimooktayon, along with her deputy and civil servants within the department, has presented eggs to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra as well as other cabinet ministers and the press as part of the campaign to stimulate the consumption of eggs in Thailand.
Under the Commerce Ministry’s policy which designates this year as the Year of Egg Consumption, Thai people are encouraged to consume more eggs, from the current average of 150 eggs per year per person to 200 eggs. Besides promoting eggs as the cheapest source of protein, the campaign also provides support for egg farmers, who are suffering from the egg price slump stemming from oversupply.
