BANGKOK, 24 May 2011 – The Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) has announced its disbandment as well as the termination of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in Bangkok to welcome the upcoming election.

Police Advisor for Security Affairs Police General Pongsapat Pongcharoen, as Deputy Director of CAPO, disclosed that a resolution had been reached not to seek the Cabinet’s approval on further extension of the ISA, which had been effective in seven districts of Bangkok since 9 February this year. As a result, the security measure came to its expiration today.

The CAPO Deputy Director said the discontinuation of the ISA was suitable upon an improving political situation and a favorable atmosphere for the approaching general election. He believed the electoral laws would be sufficient for maintaining peace and order in the society for the time being.

At the same time, Pol Gen Pongsapat declared the dissolution of CAPO, adding that the peace-keeping mission would now be passed on to the Metropolitan Police Bureau, which would open a special operation center for the protection of important places and people as well as the follow-up on future movements of political groups.
